The 21st Century has brought with it immense economic opportunities with increasing trade and continuous growth in international commerce. With more than 80 percent of the world trade being carried through oceans and seas, the maritime sector holds a key position towards development of mankind and alleviation of poverty.
We see multifaceted threats to international security, economy and environment in the background of growing terrorism, piracy, exploitation of sea resources, degradation of ecosystems and global warming. This requires comprehensive and collaborated approach to handle and collective efforts to capitalize on the opportunities toward progress.
International Maritime Conference (IMC), conjoined with Exercise AMAN, is a forum for free debate and dispassionate exchange of views on maritime issues that concern us all. First ever International Maritime Conference was organized by Pakistan Navy in 2007. Over the years, 10 International Maritime Conferences have been hosted by Pakistan Navy.
Thematically, IMC focused on key elements of maritime domain that helped channelize diverse perspectives on contemporary and emerging issues while attempting to arrive at clear outcomes. The forum has gathered some best minds in the national and international circles of maritime affairs and strategic studies: who had been pondering on the issues of economy, security and environment and with nexus on emerging threats and the opportunities.
